Gareth Pugh Fall RTW 2010
The chevron pattern being used graphically as a pattern and as cut in the clothes
I'm keeping a catalog of my favorite coats and silhouettes from some of my fav Fall RTW 2010 shows over on my tumblr. While perusing Gareth Pugh's collection and the various incarnations of the chevron pattern I thought about the concept of creating consistency in collections and how that helps people identify your work.
I don't ever remember being taught that in school (for my major: Digital Media because we had to learn various disciplines but, keeping a consistent style across those disciplines was never emphasized) even though it seems like such a basic and logical idea. Sure you have to go through various stages of experimentation before you finally find the style you want to stick with but, this core of idea of creating cohesiveness is important. Its something I'm working hard on with my own art, so I created this website to help keep me on track stylistically.
The Chevron pattern is repeated on the cuts and silhouette of the jackets, coats and vests
I think in school you're required to be a jack of all trades but, in the real world having a specialty is the better way to go. Looking for this consistency of style in other people's work is something I do subconsciously. I gravitate towards certain elements in their work and I usually want to see the continuation of that signature style. If its a mish-mash of things it catches me off guard and and I find it confusing. I never reflected on how the perception of my own work would come across to people due to inconsistencies in my own portfolio.
Steven Heller who is an author of over 130 books on graphic design and former art director was interviewed by Escape from Illustration Island and, he was asked, "What makes a good portfolio?" He said basically said, consistency, showing that you're good at a certain style and you have an aesthetic instead of showing a mishmash of things. Having a solid portfolio shows that you're focused and capable of developing an idea, reworking it and expanding upon it shows that you're a good thinker.
I wish I had gotten such advice years ago when I was putting together my portfolio. Right now I'm working on editing down my portfolio, there might be less pieces but there is a more cohesive style.
Gareth Pugh reused the chevron pattern in a variety of ways and graphic designers and illustrators can learn from that, you can reuse your own signature patterns, color palettes, textures, etc in a variety of ways while still maintaining consistency in your style and portfolio.
Looking at the Fall runway shows you see this consistency throughout, whether it was in terms of color palette, silhouettes, shapes, fit, graphic patterns, textures or styling!
Fashion designers also explore themes in their collections, one big theme for Fall Ready-To-Wear was tribes as seen in Jean Paul Gaultier's collection. I recently started to do themes in my own work, I illustrated a Heraldic series of illustrations. Doing work in sets, series or themes is great if you eventually want to sell your work, that way people can buy a series of 3 or 4 illustrations or posters to decorate their homes.
A lot of forethought that goes into creating a successful fashion collection, after deciding on a theme, color palette, silhouette, textures, and styling it must all translate to the retail world and make people want it. Graphic designers can also relate to that, since our work is often used to sell ideas or products but, when we're applying for jobs our portfolios are selling us and our talent, so creating a consistent look and style is key!

I don't think anyone quite believes me when I tell them about the kiss of death. Thus, I shall share all my OTPs that have died on me. Alternately, there are also the crack pairings, but those I know will never happen.
Today I'm focusing on anime/manga.

Last night I watched Disney's Aladdin for the first time in like a decade or more. While I'd forgotten how much I loved the movie, I found that I hadn't forgotten any of the words. XD; When I was a kid I was even worse with the "watch stuff ad nauseum" thing, and I would happily watch the same movie every day for a month. So not only do I know all the songs, I know every bit of dialogue by heart, too.
Very early this morning (at 6:22, although to my body it was 5:22, fucking Daylight Savings) I got startled out of a sound sleep by some fucker ringing my doorbell. This happens a LOT, because people tend to ring my bell any time they forget their fucking keys, figuring for some reason that I will let them into the building. I don't, because 1)it's not safe, and 2)FUCK YOU, drunken idiots. Anyway, I stayed in bed and fumed about how I'd been totally asleep and now I wasn't.
But then I got a KNOCK on my door, and when I got up to peer out the peephole it was a police officer on the other side. D:
So I opened the door, and it turns out there had been a robbery up on the fourth floor about forty-five minutes prior, and he wanted to know if I'd heard anything outside. I hadn't-- I was totally asleep-- and I felt really bad that I couldn't be any help. To be honest I don't think I'd have even noticed anything, because I'm so used to assholes standing outside my apartment and yelling. If there was any noise this time, I apparently slept right through it.
Anyway, now I feel somewhat less safe. Doesn't "robbery" connote that the person was home when it happened, and that there was some sort of threat or violence involved? If he just came home to find stuff ransacked that'd be burglary, right? I wish I'd asked the officer more questions, but my brain was so sleep-fogged and I was all too aware that I was answering the door in mismatched Power Puff Girls pajamas. But I wanted to know if he knew how the robber(s) had gotten in-- our foyer is locked. Did someone let them in? Did they pick the lock? And why go all the way up to a random apartment on the fourth floor for a robbery? That seems impractical, unless the robbers knew the guy who lived there and were sure he had good stuff to steal. (A practical robber would hit, well, me or the guy across the hall; we're the first apartments on the bottom floor, so you'd think we'd be easier to get in and out of. No, this thought does not make me feel any safer. On the other hand I own so little of value that I'd have to laugh at any robber who tried. ENJOY THE BROKEN CAMERA AND THE 500LB TV, SIR!)
Anyway, the cop took my info and that was that. I went back to bed and wondered worryingly for a while. I hate not feeling safe in my own home!

Because it is awesome and I know she will enjoy it. And because more people should enjoy the awesome that is Ryohgo Narita's works. The light novel is currently at six volumes and still going. The manga is at ~10 chapters last I looked. And the anime is currently at 10 episodes (out of 24).
Brains Base is doing such a great job with this series, ♥

Telephone - Short Version from Popsessed on Vimeo.
Omg a very tight re-edit of Telephone that fits the frantic nature of the song much better and leaves out most of the (poorly) acted scenes that interrupted the music! I have to agree with others who said Beyonce is amazing in this video.
